The Saudi Pro League has emerged as a potential destination for Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, with Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit predicting the move. However, Petit believes it will happen later in Haaland’s career, not anytime soon.
Haaland, currently one of the world’s most prolific strikers, continues to dominate with Manchester City. The Norwegian forward has scored 10 goals in seven matches this season, continuing his remarkable form. He has already set records, becoming the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals, and has netted eight league hat-tricks, equalling Thierry Henry and Michael Owen.
The Saudi Pro League is rapidly attracting global football stars, and securing a player like Haaland would be a significant statement. However, Petit insists that Haaland’s current focus remains firmly on his Manchester City ambitions, not on a transfer to the Middle East.
“I believe one day we could see Erling Haaland in the Saudi Pro League, depending on their growth,” Petit told TVKampen. “But for now, he’s focused on breaking records at the club level. He’ll stay at this level for a long time.”
While Haaland’s international success with Norway has been limited, Petit suggests this could drive him to excel even more with his club. “Haaland knows he can’t make history with his nation, so he’ll focus on achieving greatness with his clubs for years to come,” Petit added.
Haaland to Saudi Arabia – But Only Later
Although Haaland is in his prime and continues to attract interest from major European clubs like Real Madrid, his current contract with Manchester City runs until 2027. Manager Pep Guardiola will undoubtedly want to retain him as long as possible.
Petit believes that when Haaland eventually moves to the Saudi Pro League, it won’t be just for the money. “If Haaland considers Saudi Arabia, it won’t be about the money. His ambition surpasses financial gains,” Petit emphasized. “Even if Saudi clubs offer £200 million, I don’t think he’d go unless it’s towards the end of his career.”
Kevin De Bruyne to Saudi Pro League Possible Next Summer
While Erling Haaland may not head to the Saudi Pro League soon, his Manchester City teammate Kevin De Bruyne could be a more immediate target. The Belgian midfielder, who remains crucial for City despite being 33, was linked with a move to Al-Ittihad over the summer.
De Bruyne’s contract with Manchester City is set to expire at the end of this season. He has expressed interest in extending his stay at the Etihad, saying in September, “I’m sure there will be talks with City as the season progresses. Right now, I just want to play good football.”
Although discussions over a contract renewal haven’t begun, speculation about De Bruyne moving to the Saudi Pro League could resurface next summer if City does not offer him an extension.
As the Saudi Pro League continues to lure top football talents, the possibility of both Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne joining the league in the future remains a tantalizing prospect for fans of the Gulf State’s football revolution.
