Pep Guardiola: ‘Manchester City need 10 more wins for title’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has praised his players for ‘not panicking’ against Newcastle United, as they picked up a 3-1 win to maintain their 12-point lead at the Premier League summit.

A Jacob Murphy goal on the counter, four minutes after Sergio Aguero had netted his second of the match, made things interesting at the Etihad Stadium.

Aguero went on to complete his hat-trick – number 11 in a City shirt – to help City reach 65 points after just 24 matches.

Guardiola insists that there is still plenty of work to be done before they can be crowned champions, however, despite the big gap on the chasing pack.

“We need 10 more wins to be champions, and we’ll try for more points,” he told BBC Sport. “We face these kind of teams – Southampton, West Ham, Bournemouth, who play with the 5-4-1, that’s why it’s so important to attack this kind of team.

“It’s not how many goals you score, it’s how many chances you create, it’s how many chances your keeper has to save. It was important how we reacted at 2-1, we didn’t panic.”

City have conceded in seven of their last eight home games in all competitions, having kept three clean sheets in the previous four.
