Arsenal have officially signed Mikel Merino transfer from Real Sociedad. The Euro 2024 winner joins the Gunners for an initial fee of €33 million, with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the new signing, saying, “Merino brings immense quality with his experience and versatility. He has consistently performed at the highest level in both club and international football.” Arteta believes Merino will significantly strengthen Arsenal’s squad with his technical skills, strong character, and positive personality.
Merino played a crucial role in Spain’s Euros campaign, scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final against Germany. The 28-year-old midfielder spent the last six years at Real Sociedad but previously experienced English football during a season with Newcastle in 2017/18. Although his time at Newcastle was challenging, Merino’s return to England is expected to be more successful.
Merino is Arsenal’s second major signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori. Additionally, Arsenal made David Raya’s loan from Brentford a permanent move.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, emphasized the importance of the Merino transfer, stating, “Merino was a key target this summer. His experience, physicality, and athleticism are vital as we aim to build on last season’s strong performances.”
Arsenal, having finished second to Manchester City in the past two Premier League seasons, are determined to end their title drought, which has lasted since the 2003/04 season.
