Liverpool beaten by Napoli in Edinburgh

Liverpool slipped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Napoli on Sunday as their poor pre-season form continued.

Things haven’t gone entirely to plan for the European champions ahead of the new season.

Routine wins over Tranmere and Bradford saw them begin preparations in style but across the pond, they didn’t have so much joy.

They were beaten by both Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla before drawing 2-2 with Sporting in New York.

That was followed by a humbling 3-0 defeat at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli who cruised to victory courtesy of Lorenzo Insigne, Arkadiusz Milik and Amin Younes on Sunday.

Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Alisson were absent and will return to Melwood tomorrow after extended summer’s due to international tournaments.

Sadio Mane only finished his season last Saturday after losing the African Cup of Nations final with Senegal against Algeria.

In their absence Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain and and Georginio Wijnaldum were deployed in attack but failed to impress.

The Reds met Carlo Ancelotti’s side in Dublin last pre-season in which they won 5-0, but the Italians claimed some revenge after Liverpool dumped them out of the Champions League group stages in December.
