Ghana vs Uganda: Match Preview

Ghana’s build up for this African Cup of Nations campaign hasn’t gone particularly well. They haven’t played any warm up friendlies this month and their last outing was in November in their World Cup qualifying group.

This ended 2-0 to Egypt, who are joint favorites alongside Ghana to top this African Cup of Nations group. The defeat to Egypt made it five games without a win for Ghana, two of which ended in defeat. One of their three draws during this period was at home to Uganda too, so the signs aren’t all promising for the favourites here.

Ghana do have the advantage in terms of absolute quality within their squad though. They have the likes of Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew leading the line, whilst Christian Atsu, Daniel Amartey, and Baba Rahman provide yet more big name potential. They just don’t seem to be gelling at the moment though, as is evident by the fact they have scored just two goals in their last five games.

Uganda’s second and final warm up friendly was them losing 3-0 to Ivory Coast on Wednesday, but this came after a very impressive 3-1 win away to Slovakia last Sunday. They have now won two and lost three of their last five outings.

This saw them finish 2nd in their qualifying group for this competition, with their 13 points putting them below Burkina Faso on head to head results. Ghana only managed 14 points in their matches though, although that was enough to put them top of the table.

Ghana have won two, drawn three, and lost one of their six historic meetings with Uganda.

Ghana have only won 27% of their last 11 games, whilst Uganda have avoided defeat in 60% of their last ten games. Uganda have got a result in 67% of their previous meetings with Ghana too.

Veteran striker Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s captain and top scorer with 48 goals in his 97 appearances. Andre Ayew partners him up front and brother Jordan is also present. Newcastle winger Christian Atsu, Leicester defender Daniel Amartey, and Schalke full back Baba Rahman are also notable players to watch.

Experienced striker Geofrey Massa will captain Uganda, with his 17 goals in 64 appearances making him the highest scorer. Standard Liege midfielder Farouk Miya will be a threat too after notching 15 goals in 38 outings. Other than that Uganda are looking a bit bereft of quality.
