Antony could leave Manchester United on loan in January, with a permanent summer move likely. The Brazilian winger has struggled to secure regular playing time at Old Trafford this season.
Erik ten Hag, who worked with Antony at Ajax, played a key role in bringing him to United. However, despite Ten Hag’s support, Antony has not lived up to the £86 million price tag United paid for him. The deal was controversial, especially after reports revealed that United scouts valued him at only £25 million during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.
United initially intended to pay no more than £60 million for Antony. However, they eventually spent £82 million guaranteed, making him the club’s second most expensive signing. Antony has found himself behind Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo in the pecking order this season.
The departures of Jadon Sancho, Omari Forson, and Facundo Pellistri have not improved Antony’s prospects. He has only played 139 minutes across all competitions, with his lone start coming in the Carabao Cup against Barnsley.
According to reports, United are open to sending Antony on loan in January, which could lead to a permanent exit next summer. The club is reportedly willing to accept offers as low as £40 million, far from the original investment.
Although Antony began his United career with goals in three consecutive Premier League matches, including against Arsenal and Manchester City, his form quickly dipped. His winner against Barcelona in February 2023 was a rare highlight, and his best performance last season came in an FA Cup tie against Newport County.
Antony’s time at United has also been marred by controversy. Last season, allegations of domestic assault surfaced, with multiple women accusing him of violence. Antony denied the allegations, but the situation added further turbulence to his career at Old Trafford.
